How to Combat Sleeplessness this Christmas

We spend a staggering third of our lives sleeping and although this may seem like a long time, studies have revealed that most of us are still not getting enough sleep. Having a good night’s sleep is crucial to productivity and is closely linked with our health. Also, sleep helps with the healing process when we injure ourselves. Sleep is an incredibly important part of life, but with late nights and early mornings becoming the reality of many, the optimum eight hours a night is becoming less and less of a reality. Sleep is the first sacrifice we make to lead busy and fulfilled lifestyles, but we should always remember how important sleep is and how we should never take it for granted.

Are you getting enough sleep?

It will shock you to know that almost 80% of adults in the UK have less than eight hours of sleep a night and are instead having on average between four and six hours a night. This can have a huge impact on work life, relationships and a person’s overall well-being. On the other end of the spectrum, some people have admitted to having over nine hours sleep a night, which can leave you feeling over-rested and quite sluggish in everyday life. Eight hours is the perfect amount of time to sleep throughout the night.

What affects our sleep patterns?

There are lots of different factors that affect our sleeping patterns and this will vary depending on the individual. Some of the most common factors that have the most influence over a person’s sleeping pattern is there lifestyle, which entails their work patterns, i.e. if they work late nights or early mornings, their social life, i.e. if they like to stay up partying. It’s been revealed that 18-24 year olds are most likely to get between 6-8 hours of sleep a night, whereas 25-34 year olds have shown to have less sleep.

Despite age, or lifestyle, it’s important to make sure that we are getting enough sleep and are looking after our bodies. So, try and get into a nightly routine, where you can go to sleep at the same time and get in the recommended eight hours and you will feel the benefit.

How to get a great night’s sleep:

Getting a good night’s sleep is about switching off and settling down at an appropriate time. In order to get enough sleep, you need to switch off your phone and turn off the lights in your bedroom. Adding blackout blinds to your room can really help to get you into a routine. Blocking out the light creates an environment that is perfect for falling asleep. Remember, switch off and block everything out and you should get your recommended eight hours.
